Equality in Sports

Crown Primary School P5/6 (2016/17)

We had a fantastic visit from Caley Thistle’s Gary Warren teaching us all about gender and race equality in sports.

We found out some very worrying facts including:

  • There are not even half as many women’s football matches on TV as men’s
  • Men footballers earn 3x more than women
  • 24% of female footballers had been bullied
  • There have been well over 600 racist incidents in football

The children also found that they couldn’t name any women’s players. We decided that this was likely due to the lack of publication of women’s games.

We were able to link Gary’s visit to Article 2 (non-discrimination) of the UNCRC and Global Goal 10 (reduced inequalities).

Lucky Connor even got to model a ‘show racism the red card’ shirt which Caley are using to promote race equality in their games!
