Rights Respecting School!

As a school we are working towards Unicef’s Rights Respecting School Award. This month we have been learning about article 19 from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Article 19 – Governments must do all they can to ensure that children are protected from all kinds of violence, neglect or harm.

We learned about Sadako Sasaki and the Thousand Paper Cranes. She was a young girl who was hurt by the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima in Japan in 1945. She hoped that if she made one thousand paper cranes she could make a wish. She made a thousand paper origami cranes and then wished for peace in the world.

We made 120 origami birds and wrote peace on their wings. We hope that all the children in the world will be protected from harm.
